Spojen� mezi z�kladnou a Zem� nen� kv�li pravideln�m poruch�m t�m�� mo�n�, a tak je Samov�m jedin�m spole�n�kem a z�rove� pomocn�kem inteligentn� po��ta� Gerty (jeho hlas namluvil Kevin Spacey). Po t�m�� t�ech letech v izolaci si Sam nep�eje nic jin�ho, ne� b�t zp�tky na Zemi se svou �enou a malou dcerou, kter� se narodila t�sn� p�ed jeho odjezdem. Do n�vratu na Zemi mu na�t�st� zb�vaj� u� pouh� dva t�dny. Sam�v zdravotn� stav se ale za��n� zhor�ovat. Bolesti hlavy a halucinace, kter�mi trp�, zp�sob� p�i rutinn� prohl�dce jednoho z t�ebn�ch stroj� t�m�� fat�ln� nehodu, p�i kter� je Sam zran�n.
